Matthew Paul Nunan, better
known as “Matty,” was born December 3, 1999 at 12:29 am.
He was a whopping 10.5 pounds and 22 inches long. Matty’s
birth was traumatic, and he was diagnosed with a subarachnoid
hemorrhage and seizure disorder. A neonatal intensive
care unit program followed Matty for his first two years of
life; to make sure he did not suffer any further developmental
delays. At 22 months, he was discharged from the program
as a "miracle" baby. Considering how traumatic
his birth was, it really was miraculous that he emerged a
healthy toddler.
By the age of 27 months,
however, we knew something was going on with our little
boy. He began losing previously attained skills, and his
behavior started to become very odd. He was getting
increasingly harder to deal with, especially out in
crowds. Our once super friendly baby, nicknamed the
"The Mayor" in his Gymboree class, could no longer
follow along with the other children. He would flop to
the floor and cry while the other children were sitting in a
circle playing simple games. Often, we would call his
name, and he would not even look up at us. The worst
symptom was that he was not gaining language and speech the
way his peers were. Our beautiful little baby was
slipping away into the world of autism. Matty was
officially diagnosed by the age of three.
